Chances are you’ve probably heard of Weebly, especially after they were acquired by Square earlier this year for hundreds of millions… Here, we take a look at what Weebly is, how it works and what’s changed since Square bought it. You’ll also find helpful links to our in-depth articles where you can get more detailed information. So read on to find out what Weebly is all about…
Weebly is an online website builder which uses a drag and drop editing tool to make creating a website easy and hassle free.
Weebly lets you create a professional website at the touch of your fingertips; you don’t need to know how to code or be a web design specialist. Because of this, Weebly is extremely popular. Over 45 million people worldwide have created websites with Weebly, and more than 325 million users visit these sites every month!
You can see an example of one of these Weebly websites below:
Based in San Francisco, Weebly was founded in 2007 by three college students: David Rusenko, Dan Veltri, and Chris Fanini. These friends saw how their peers were struggling to get their work online, so they wanted to design a website builder that allowed everyone to create their own website easily and without breaking the bank.
Over the years Weebly has continued to regularly release new updates and features to keep their users happy. For example they made integrating Facebook Messenger into your website possible so you can chat easily and directly with customers, and updated their automatic tax calculator to make selling through your website simpler and more reliable.
In April 2018 Weebly was bought out by Square for a grand total of $365 million. Square is a company that makes it easy for sellers to accept card payments and use analytics to keep track of their business. Like Weebly, Square has a strong passion for helping entrepreneurs build and grow.
The acquisition means a stronger and more comprehensive ecommerce focus, which can be seen in Weebly’s recent release of its new and improved mobile app. This latest update aims to make make it easy for business owners to manage their websites wherever they are, from any device. Such features include printing shipping labels directly from the app or creating branded coupons from your phone.
Since its beginnings in 2007 Weebly has grown to become one of the most popular website builders. Today it powers more than 40 million websites worldwide, helping businesses and individuals reach a global audience without needing advanced tech skills or a big budget.
Weebly is a drag and drop website builder. You simply select a feature or element you want on your page (e.g. images, text boxes), drag it to where you want it, and drop it!
To create a website, you just have to select and customize a template of your choice from a library of over 50. Once you’ve done this, click publish and it’ll be online for people to find.
Some of Weebly’s most popular features include its ecommerce functions, which allow you to accept payments and track an inventory through your site. Weebly also lets you have some awesome design options, like having a video for a background and creating custom headers, plus the option to edit your site from any device with Weebly’s mobile apps.

How much does Weebly charge? Weebly offers a free plan, so the answer is nothing! But if you want professional features like the ability to sell through your site, you’ll need to upgrade. Weebly’s paid price plans start at just $8 a month, and vary in their scalability and functionality. Read our Weebly Pricing Review for a more detailed look at which of Weebly’s price plans is best for you.
Weebly was created with first-time business owners and entrepreneurs in mind, so all of its templates have a professional design. These templates cover a wide audience, including:
- Businesses, such as restaurants, finance, tech, health, wildlife, travel, and events
- Online stores, such as sports, clothing, coffee, interiors, and health & wellbeing
Weebly is suitable for anyone without any technical experience who wants to create a website, but it’s also a good choice if you do know a bit of code because its plans cater for all skill levels.

We recommend Weebly for portfolios, first-time business owners, and entrepreneurs who aren’t confident with technical stuff.
This is because it has a wide range of features which are great for scaling your website, and it also has a huge range of apps to choose from. Adding apps and extra functions means you can expand what your site can do, in just a few simple steps. This ease of use makes it great for beginners or for those who want to build their website quickly, but it also has the option for coding for those who are more experienced.
With great SEO prompts and guides, a competitively priced Starter plan, and impressive scalability, Weebly is an excellent choice for small business and portfolio websites.
How much does Weebly cost?
You can create a site on Weebly totally free. But for a professional site (e.g. no ads) or the ability to sell online, you do need to upgrade to a paid plan. Weebly’s cheapest price plan is the Starter Plan at just $8 a month. For a full breakdown of Weebly’s price plans, read our Weebly Pricing Review.
Is Weebly free to publish?
Yes, you can create, publish, and edit your website completely free on Weebly! There are certain features that are locked unless you upgrade (e.g. accepting payments), but their pricing is completely transparent and there are no hidden costs to catch you out. If you want to start an online store, read our Weebly eCommerce Review for more information.
How many Weebly websites can I have?
You can create a maximum of 10 Weebly websites in one account, but if you need more you can make extra accounts until you have the number of websites that you need. Just note that if you want two business premium sites, for example, you’ll have to pay for them separately: one payment does not cover them both.
What impact will Square acquiring Weebly have?
Since Square bought out Weebly there have already been some changes, which can be seen in Weebly’s latest ecommerce updates, and more are likely to appear over the coming months. Mostly, the acquisition means a stronger focus on commerce, with the aim being to help entrepreneurs and business owners succeed across all channels – in person and through apps as well as online.
